How Follicular Unit Hair Transplants Work

The first step is your free, initial consultation. Besides evaluating you for hair transplant candidacy, you will get a chance to review patient testimonials, review pictures of the procedure and ask as many questions as you like so that you are comfortable with every phase of the procedure and our staff. We will use a state of the art video microscope to analyze areas of genetically stable hair (for donor areas) and the thinning area. All of this is utilized in preparing a customized plan for your hair restoration. Once we have developed a personalized plan for your hair restoration, you will sit down with Dr. Marko and discuss how to best achieve the results that suit your needs. He will review the time frame, expense and expectations involved in your plan.

Once you have decided to proceed with the procedure, we will use a special high-powered surgical microscope to transplant units of one to three follicles from the donor area to a thinning area. These transplanted, healthy follicles continue to grow hair naturally. This is your hair. There is no threat of rejection as there would be with foreign material implanted into your body. Even though your genetic code may have pushed you toward premature baldness, you will age with full, think head of hair.

After the procedure, the transplanted hair will retain its original traits; color, texture, growth rate, amount of curl. The newly transplanted follicles are maintained by your normal circulation and begin to grow again naturally. Years ago, and possibly now at some less reputable establishments, transplants of 6 -20 (or more) follicles were transplanted (commonly known as "plugs") and gave the appearance of bad doll hair. Dr. Marko only uses Follicular Unit transplants of 1-3 follicles (after removing excess fatty tissue), which allows the hairs to be placed closer together giving a much more natural hair line.
